MEET IGA XIAOYI ZHOU
IGA is a LA/OC-based film director, writer, and editor originally from China, where her passion for storytelling began. She began building her filmmaking career as a freelancer after moving to California. She graduated with honors and earned a BA in film directing from Columbia College Hollywood. She created Laughing Duck Production with her husband, Bilal Amir J. Dortch, in 2023, with the goal of producing both original visual arts and commercial projects.
Her creative vision is deeply rooted in a commitment to showcasing the narratives of minority communities and offering authentic and innovative ideas from a female perspective. She wants to use her films to build a bridge that connects people with different backgrounds and inspires them to see the world differently.
Over the years, she has written and directed several short films that focus on her community and provide social commentary on modern culture. Some notable films are A Dog's Journey (documentary/2017), Flavor of the Season(documentary/2022), Behind My Gaze (thriller/short/2023), and Candies (drama/short/2024).
She has also worked in many different roles across all stages of filmmaking—from script editor, assistant director, producer, and script to post-sound designer. She believes a cool filmmaker needs to know how to do everything, as she enjoys new challenges.
